Job description

HMG is seeking a Rotational Chief Engineer — Classic Motor Yacht (Private)
Y2 Minimum
Location: Auckland, New Zealand (initially)
Start Date: 13 January 2026
Rotation: Time for time (approximately 8 weeks on / 8 weeks off)
Salary: €10,000 per month × 12 (€120,000 annual equivalent)
Flights: Premium Economy for flights over 6 hours; upgraded to Business Class after 1 year’s service
Itinerary: Fiji · Tahiti · Australia (annuals) · Solomon Islands · Micronesia · Indonesia · Singapore (5-year special docking)
The Yacht
A fully restored classic motor yacht of exceptional pedigree — privately owned, immaculately presented, and maintained to the highest standard under a Continuous Machinery Survey (Class) program. Major maintenance is carried out annually to spread the survey load; pistons are pulled and main bearings inspected every year.
When the owners are not aboard, the team remains busy with crew-driven maintenance and refit projects. This is a program for those who take pride in doing things properly — we do everything ourselves.
The Role
We’re seeking a rotational Chief Engineer with a strong trade background — a hands-on problem-solver who enjoys classic machinery and systems engineering. This isn’t an “office” role: expect to be on the tools daily, leading by example and mentoring others.
You’ll work alongside an experienced Chief who came up through the same vessel, offering guidance and mentorship while expecting initiative and drive.
What We’re Looking For
Trade-qualified or strong hands-on background essential
British, Kiwi, or Australian nationality preferred (for team balance)
Driven, humble, and genuinely passionate about classic yachts
Willing to teach and develop the 3rd engineers onboard
Self-starter who thrives on technical work — not admin
“If you think a Chief lives in the office, this isn’t for you.”
Owner Program & Usage
Strictly private — approx. 10 weeks owner use per year
Stable, loyal, and highly skilled crew
Hands-on culture where pride in craft and collaboration matter most
Why This Role?
This is more than a job — it’s a chance to work on a piece of maritime history that demands and rewards genuine engineering skill. Perfect for a motivated Second stepping up or a proven Chief seeking a dynamic, self-reliant program with long-term potential.
