Being a deckhand or stewardess is the perfect role to utilize my experience in hospitality. I have spent ten years working towards a career in yachting as a barista, bartender, assistant manager and guest house manager and I believe I am a highly competitive candidate for a number of reasons. Firstly, during my first yachting season, I noted that the most important qualities for yachting are to be hard-working and adaptable to many unexpected situations. I have experience working in all of these conditions. In my last role as a stew/deckhand, I had to be extremely adaptable, as my tasks varied daily and could change from cleaning indoors, to cooking for the crew and working outside as a deckhand. In this role I worked independently, cleaning all the interior, cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner and working outdoors on the yacht. This position allowed me to gain insight in the yachting industry, working confidently in these areas, adapt easily and be flexible with working hours. In addition, to manage this role I had to be autonomous under supervision, adaptable, and organized. My supervisor regularly commended my self-motivation & initiative in supporting this role. My strong ability to work remotely & independently would allow me to adapt seamlessly to a yachting role. Before my first yachting role, I have worked in the hospitality industry for almost 10 years. I worked in fast-paced bars, serving cocktails, preparing coffees to a high quality and managed a small team. Prior to this role, I also worked as guest house manager for Kite Active in Paje, Zanzibar. I acquired extensive experience with managing a guest house successfully. Lots of things would happen on a daily basis where I needed to find quick solutions for. I successfully facilitated the guest house and supported the owner with everything that was needed. I learned about keeping finances clear and organized, so that I was able to see what we were able to spend money on. In addition to this, I also gained experience in other, relatable fields, where communication and interpersonal skills were key. I worked in sales and telecommunications, where I gained knowledge of the sales environment and obtained a professional telephone manner. Lastly, I worked as a travel agent for ABC Travel in Brighton, where both of these worlds came together. I made some really successful packages for various clients who were very satisfied about the trips and experiences I curated for them. My diverse professional history in the hospitality business has also equipped me with a flexible communication style that allows me to effectively adapt to new professional environments. I have honed my ability to work hard whilst remaining empathetic and approachable. I have been commended by supervisors for my strong interpersonal skills & ability to make clients and colleagues feel supported and heard. I’m eager to grow fast in this industry, and I am willing to do my absolute best to succeed work wise. Furthermore, I’m a people’s person, and love to connect with people. I recently obtained my STCW (16-09-2022) and ENG1 certificate (09-09-2022) and therefore I’m very excited to start working on a yacht as soon as possible. I believe my outlined skills, experience and enthusiasm for the field would transfer perfectly to the role of a stewardess and / or deckhand. I am highly motivated to support the yacht and believe it would be an invaluable and exciting opportunity to continue to expand my insight across a new yacht. The experience I had on S/Y Thandeka hopefully helps to get me my next yachting role. I naturally feels like the perfect next step.
