About me
I have worked in the Maritime industry in excess of 25 years within the Merchant Navy. My career progressing to Master / Captain within my previous role and working as Marine Superintendent Head of the Nautical Team for Scenic and Emerald Cruises. During this period with Scenic Cruises I have overseen 3 new builds and brought the vessels into operation. My roles have demanded meticulous attention to compliance with international legislation, including the implementation of evolving reforms and requirements, especially in the context Flag, Class and USCG regulations. WORK EXPERIENCE Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours – Marine Superintendent DPA & CSO Jan 2024- Present Day I managed and was the single point of contact for all of the regulatory and compliance issues ensuring that all company ships were complaint with ISM (International Safety Management) and ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) Codes, Flag and Port State regulations, and industry guidance (CLIA, IAATO, AECO). Management and maintenance of the Safety Management System (SMS) Maintain and develop the SMS, ensuring it is effectively implemented across the fleet. As Safety Officer, i led both internal and external audits throughout the year ensuring any incidents, accidents and nonconformities were identified and report findings to relevant authorities. In addition, I served as a liaison to project teams, providing support and technical assistance on all marine and compliance matters for new ships coming into service. Due to elongated periods at sea I conducted a training needs analysis across my team mapping compliance and any certification requirements and addressing any areas of development for my crew. I managed all HR-related issues on board, escalating to the HR Director for further investigation or guidance as appropriate. This role has enabled me to further develop my Maritime Experience with a strong focus on safety and compliance management. To include developing my proficiency in audits and a keen eye for detail and thoroughness of investigative actions and identifying resolutions. I have further developed my communication skills for effective interaction with shipboard personnel, shore management, and regulatory authorities. I am a strong leader with the ability to manage teams and foster a culture of safety and compliance. Scenic luxury cruises & Tours – Master New Build and Operational May 2021-Present Day New build Master for Emerald Azzurra, Emerald Sakara and Scenic Eclipse 2. All vessels were inhouse builds requiring personal hands on approach with ship yard, project management and Class. Acting as New build manager during the periods of programs. Sea Trials were managed by myself and Class during all stages. As the Master of a luxury cruise ship, holding the ultimate responsibility for the safe, efficient, and navigational integrity of the vessel while ensuring that guests and crew experience the pinnacle of maritime luxury. Exceptional maritime skill, strong leadership abilities, and a flair for delivering unparalleled guest service. • Vessel Operations: Direct and oversee all ship operations, encompassing navigation, piloting, safety protocols, and emergency management. Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations, company policies, and organizational procedures. • Leadership: Lead and manage a diverse crew, ranging from maritime personnel to hospitality staff, fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, and professionalism. Conduct regular assessments and training programs to promote safety and operational efficiency among crew members. • Guest Experience: Act as the ship’s ambassador, interacting with guests and providing a warm welcome and presence at onboard events. Uphold the cruise line's high standards of service, encouraging guest engagement and creating memorable experiences throughout their journey. • Navigation Management: Utilize advanced navigational technologies and techniques to chart safe and optimal courses. Monitor weather patterns and maritime conditions to anticipate challenges and make informed, proactive decisions. • Crisis Management: Lead emergency procedures and response protocols. Ensure that a state of readiness is maintained for any potential incidents and that crew members are well-prepared through drills and training. • Compliance and Reporting: Ensure adherence to all environment, health, and safety policies. Conduct thorough inspections and maintain accurate records of all relevant documentation, including navigation logs, safety reports, and operational standards. • Financial Oversight: Collaborate with the shipboard management team to manage budgets and resources effectively, ensuring cost-control measures are adhered to without compromising service quality. Holland America - Master Apr 2020 -Jan 2021 Overall, in command, overseeing all operation and management onboard a luxury cruise liner. Overview of budgets, manning performance and disciplinary procedures. Oversee the safe navigation and overall performance of the vessel. Interaction with guest and company officials. Ability to operate both Azipods and Conventional vessels to the highest standards. Holland America – Staff Captain Oct 2003 - Apr 2021 As a senior management team member and second in command of both large and medium-sized cruise vessels with Azipod and conventional manoeuvring machinery, I am responsible to the Captain and the Company for: • Navigation and Operations: Overseeing safe navigation, BRM standards, stability, trim, manoeuvring, berthing, mooring, and anchoring. • Team Management: Managing and developing an international team of deck officers, crew, specialists, and the Security Department; coordinating with the medical team; chairing Health, Environment, Safety, and Security meetings; promoting a positive culture to meet fleet objectives. • Safety Programs: Managing onboard safety programs, emergency drills, and responding to emergencies. Overseeing fire-detection, alarms, firefighting, lifesaving, and safety equipment maintenance with the Safety Officer and Staff Chief Engineer. • Compliance and Discipline: Maintaining the official Ship's Logbook, monitoring ballast water discharge and pollution. Enforcing Company policies, investigating complaints, and disciplining crew members as necessary. • Maintenance: Overseeing non-technical ship maintenance, guest and crew decks, and internal accommodation fixtures and fittings in collaboration with the Hotel Manager. • Dry-docking: Long-term planning for dry-docking with Company Superintendents, preparing scopes of work, pre-ordering equipment and spare parts, and preparing for statutory and class surveys. Managing safety training and projects during dry-dock, monitoring progress. Successfully undertook 11 significant dry-docks for HAL vessels, including 6 as Staff Captain, and prepared MS Veendam for de-commissioning and transfer. • Inspections: Managing USCG safety and US Port Health inspections during home-port operations. • Budgeting: Establishing, agreeing, and monitoring annual budgets for areas of responsibility, justifying maintenance investments. • Tender Operations: Coordinating with the Hotel Management and Shore Excursion teams for safe and timely tender operations. • Guest Relations: Hosting talks, social functions, and deputising for the Captain. • Additional Duties: Undertaking any other required duties for effective vessel management, benefitting the company, guests, and crew.
