As someone who has always been drawn to the ocean—the endless horizons, golden sunsets, and the thrill of watersports—choosing a career in yachting felt like a natural extension of who I am. My name is Melvyn Marais, a 26-year-old yachting professional based in Cape Town, South Africa. For the past four years, I’ve dedicated myself to this industry, constantly learning, growing, and embracing every opportunity to live life to the fullest while doing what I love. Since March 2024, I’ve been serving as Lead Deckhand/Bosun on a 50m M/Y, where I’ve had the privilege of working both on deck and in dry-dock, assisting in various rebuilding projects. This role has further refined my hands-on skills, from carpentry to tender driving, while strengthening my leadership abilities. As an RYA Advanced Powerboat and PWC Instructor, I’m passionate about watersports and love sharing that enthusiasm with guests and crew alike—whether it’s towing wakeboarders at sunrise or leading a fun day of jet skiing. My latest travels have taken me across the Gulf of Mexico twice, through the Panama Canal, and along the stunning west coast of Mexico. These journeys have only deepened my appreciation for this lifestyle of adventure and discovery. I am a naturally optimistic and sociable individual who thrives in a positive, team-oriented environment.
